Fundraiser: Taking AVFM into 2014 on a Roll

What a year! 2013 has undoubtedly been a year of rapid expansion for the Men’s Human Rights Movement. More and more people are either joining our ranks, or just speaking up on their own against the bigotry of feminism and male disposability. We are also knocking on the door of the mainstream media, and not waiting for permission to come in.

I am proud to say AVFM has been in the thick of much of this.

We have even more good things on the way. You will be seeing much of that announced on the site over the next couple of days, so expect it.

One of those announcements is the launch of AVFM multi-siting. Soon, AVFM will be just one component in a network of blogs and websites that will stretch over the globe, all addressing the issues that face men and boys under the AVFM umbrella.

We are still tweaking some of the final details, but you can read more about multi-siting, and even submit your request for a free AVFM regional blog, here.

With the help of James, we have just launched AVFM on Live365, a platform on which all AVFM Radio operations will be migrating early in the new year. Much more than just a transfer, we are planning to build our way to live 24/7 streaming news, opinion and culture worldwide in the coming new year. Too lofty? Watch us do it. Read more here.

There is so much more on the way for next year, including the AVFM’s first International Conference on Men’s Issues in Detroit next June, which is already stirring up some well-deserved excitement.

As you can imagine, even with the tireless help of our incredible volunteers, there is increasing expense with all of this. Never before has it been so expensive for AVFM to maintain its daily operations. It might even be depressing if it weren’t working so damn well.

So I am coming to you again with the request, on behalf of the entire team of managers, editors, technical personnel, media specialists and contributors, asking you to take us into 2014 with the tools to double our accomplishments of the last year. This is our most ambitious fundraiser ever because we have planned the most ambitious year ever.

The train is running smoothly, folks, and we have people here like never before, ready to shovel coal into the furnace. But we need you to give us the means to do it. Please contribute what you can to usher us to a mind blowing 2014.

Fundraiser will end on January 4, 2013

400 of your rebel Yankee dollars on it’s way. Merry Christmas.

BTW Paul, I think it helps that you’ve given a target amount here. I donated some cash a few weeks ago but I didn’t know how much you actually needed then. Now I do hopefully there will be more from me over the next few months.

Do you do this throughout the year or just around Christmas? Because I know my wallet’s usually stretched pretty thin around the Holidays, diminishing the odds I make any sort of donation.

    • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

AVFM does fundraisers quarterly, which puts this one just before Christmas. It is a difficult time for many, including reasons that are other than financial. It is also a necessity in order to keep the operation running.

Donations are strictly voluntary, and obviously on a level people can afford, which means that some can’t and won’t give. I fully understand this,

      Thanks for your comment.

  • Turbo

    $250 done.

What a great year 2013 was, and 2014 is shaping as even better.

    Congratulations to all at AVfM.

Merry Christmas to everyone, may it be safe and happy.

How do I make a donation if I am living abroad? My American credit card is tied to my Norwegian address. But your system does not allow me to continue without entering a state. I do not have paypal.

    • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

      Hi Impelluso,

You are welcome to mail a donation here. Thanks for asking.

      • impelluso

Ah, the problem is the same one I had when trying to donate to mensactivism.org.

I no longer have a checkbook so I cannot write checks. Only the US seems to use checks these days.

I will be in San Diego in late January to close out our life there and then I will pick up a box of checks once the US account is set up properly.

Is there no way to set up the payment system to allow credit cards from abroad?

        • Astrokid

BTW.. why dont you “have” paypal? Its trivial to setup. Last week I had a relative setup a brand new account and did an international transfer in less than 5 minutes.

    >Fundraiser will end on December 31, 2013

That’s a pity, I usually donate to these seasonal fundraising drives, but I don’t get paid ’till the 2nd… :(

    • Kimski

A lot of us are facing the same problem, methinks.

Let’s see if the kitten eating Overlord doesn’t extend the drive for an additional couple of days, in his infinite misogynistic wisdom.
Personally, I’m not done until Elvis has left the building.
I very much consider it a win for men and boys, every time we exceed the goals.

      • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

There have been a couple of reports of people having problems with the system, though I have not been able to track any problems down.

I will talk with Dean. Perhaps we should extend till the 3rd or 4th.

        Thanks for the concerns guys.

  • Bombay

$300 donation made! Love the work and look forward to 2014.

    • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

Many thanks! And looking forward as well!

  • numbCruncher

Why is the fundraiser ending on 31st Dec? It’s only run for a week and already we’re past the halfway point.

Paul, please let this carry on into the new year – we can hit this target!

    • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

Ok, after some consultation and considering the comments of other readers, we are going to extend it to Jan 4, 2014.

There have been some who have had difficulties donating. We hope to have whatever caused that ironed out with Paypal shortly.

  • soikku

wow, how did the fundraiser get from 5000 to 21000 dollars per quarter?
    am I getting banned now?

    • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

Uh, no, you are not getting banned, but you are getting sneered at for being stupid. How did the site get from 5k to 21k per quarter? By growing and taking on a lot more expenses and activity; by going from a one man blog to the largest men’s human rights group of its kind anywhere. By going from a small group of bloggers to an organization attracting some of the greatest luminaries of our time in the name of furthering the issues of men and boys.

Now, do you have more questions, or do you need to chew on the answer that one for a while?

PS Donation button is above. Thanks in advance.

      • soikku

        webhoster: 1000$ (extremely generous)
        blog talk radio: 625$
transportation incl. board and lodging: 500$ (generous)
        total: 2125$ per quarter
is there anything that I’m missing? There are other expenses like the website, but they are one-time expenses, and even if they would be recurring ones don’t nearly come close to 21k quarterly.

why does AVfM not list the expenses like every trustworthy charitable organization does?

        • Astrokid

          Are you a donor?
I am one, and I am not bitching about AVFM’s expenses. And I havent seen any of the donors over the last 2 years bitch about it.
Why are you bitching about it? Do you plan to donate?
If you were happy when the fundraisers were for 5K only, did you donate then?

        • http://www.deanesmay.com Dean Esmay

We aren’t a charity, nor will we likely be one any time soon. We run along models similar to other political activist publications like The Nation, National Review, etc. Donors are an important part of that model. The problem with charitable organizations, in the US at least, is that they can too easily be co-opted. Thus we can’t run on that model.

If you want what we do here to continue and increase with time, throw money in the jar. If you can’t because you’re broke, no problem. If you don’t because you’re just a snotty jerk with nothing constructive to add to the movement, go somewhere else.

          • soikku

You don’t define yourself as a charitable organization, but this doesn’t mean you should not disclose where the money goes in detail.
It’s pretty two-faced if you (Dean Esmay) try to create a shit-storm because Christina Hansen doesn’t disclose where the donations to her go but asking you the same renders one a ‘snotty jerk’…
(Not that I’m afiliated with her – I think she’s the biggest mistake AVfM ever did.)

          • Fredrik

@soikku: “It’s pretty two-faced if you (Dean Esmay) try to create a shit-storm because Christina Hansen doesn’t disclose where the donations to her go but asking you the same renders one a ‘snotty jerk’…”

No, there is a very simple difference, which is visible results. One has them; one does not. Your comparison is precisely as illogical as dividing by zero.

        • http://vilo13.blogspot.com/ Lucian Vâlsan

FYI, BlogTalkRadio is far more expensive than 625$ per year. Just saying.
And you can check that on Blogtalkradio.com – no need to trust me.

And yes, there are a lot of things that you are missing. You should start with the announcement for the Men’s Rights Conference in Detroit next year. Or with the march for Men in Crisis in Canada a few months back. Or the activism made with and by Nicholas Allahverdian. And so on, and so forth. These did not exist back in the days when the fundraiser was 5k per quarter.
Who do you think pays for those? We don’t have a tree from which we can harvest money from – though I would certainly love to have that.

If you want to effect change, there’s no way you can do that without money.
Also, remember we’re fighting against a multi-billion dollar industry of State-enforced feminism. I consider we’re doing a tremendous job in changing the dialogue given the amount of wealth that our opponents have at their disposal.

All these things cost money. If you think you can do it cheaper AND more efficient (because otherwise anyone can do it cheaper by just doing fewer things) then please, lead the way.

          • soikku

            625 USD per quarter..
And my main point was not that 21k was too much but that there’s no transparency where that money goes. I think it goes to Mr. Elam making a living which he doesn’t want to disclose..

          • Bombay

LOL It is very transparent that I am getting more than my donated money’s worth in the website alone, not counting all the other activities and the donated work of all.

Pick your battles – voluntary donations is not a good one. If you want a cause – demand that VAWA feminist shelters account for their expenses – where we had no choice but to contribute. Government funded hate groups is worthy of your fraud concerns.

          • numbCruncher

“I think it goes to Mr. Elam making a living which he doesn’t want to disclose”.

Bullshit. There a billion easier ways to make this kind of money than being one of the world’s most prominent MRAs.

Try putting your name on every feminist hitlist in the world, and see if it’s worth 21K per quarter.

          • alek

@Soikku – The licences for the web technologies alone are a few thousand. As are the licences for all the resources and education that gets billed to AVfM’s funds. Whether it’s video editing courses or templates or meme graphics or any of the hundreds of things being developed at the moment.

The hosting is about to skyrocket in costs as well with the addition of the new multi-site structure (where avfm wants to host all the largest MRA sites that apply) – so AVfM will have to cover the running costs for most of the MRA world, and in every language and country in the world. [this is for major mra sites that apply, smaller blogs will have a chance to get super-duper-cheap hosting on demand as well].

(that’s one major part why 2014 will be more expensive to run than 2013)

Another is that AVfM is increasingly going into the physical world with conferences etc (plane tickets don’t grow on trees). So 2014 will be the year of physical travel.

Luckily though, people can always volunteer

Most of AVfM labor is free, but there are things that aren’t free, like actual physical equipment, plane tickets, licencing, legal fees (you want to guess how expensive it is to protect an MRA site that’s the number one target of entire industries that will hemmorhage money due to AVfM exposing them?) And those industries are funded by FORCED contribution (the government forces you to fund them).

          • alek

Bullshit. There a billion easier ways to make this kind of money than being one of the world’s most prominent MRAs.

Here’s my estimate as a succesful online entrepreneur… I’ve watched AVfM being built since day one and all the effort and talent Paul has poured into making it what it is.

If he had invested this SAME energy in a for-profit venture, he would have created at least a few internet startups and been a millionaire. So its absurd to say to imply AVfM is built “for the sake of” profit, since if it were it would be a fucking stupid way to make money. There’s 10000 much easier ways to do it, without risking life and limb.

Also, its absurd of trolls who assume an activist is supposed to starve

I love how all these trolls try to imply that full-time activists are supposed to live on air alone.

Get this again, the only reason the MRA has been so succesful in 2013 (I mean freaking Warren Farell and Erin Pizzey are ON BOARD!!!) I MEAN HELLO! Is because Paul Elam CAN WORK 16-18 HOURS A DAY ON THIS STUFF.

Do you understand this? HAVE YOU ACTUALLY THOUGHT THIS THROUGH trolls? If a person invests 16-18 hours a day in activism IT MEANS THEY CANT HAVE A DAYJOB (do you UNDERSTAND THIS?).

What are you even saying? Are you saying that:

            A) The MRA leader/full-time activist should starve and be homeless? (and where are plane tickets gonna come from, do they grow on trees?)

            B) That only independently wealthy people should be allowed to be full-time MRA leaders? (people who have money without having to work)

Because if you’re not saying A or B, the only other option is to admit that its only possible for one to be a full-time MRA if one is funded by donors who donate so that the full-time MRA does the work FOR them.

(this again with the knowledge that most of donor funding goes to operating costs, and a smaller fraction going to living costs for the full-time MRA). People trust that this given leader will only use as little for living costs as it takes to basically survive (not use the money for luxury) and actually invest most of the funds in MRA operating costs.

If you’re not one of those people who have that trust, then don’t donate, it’s VOLUNTARY.

Ever wondered how come all the 30-50 volunteers who work on AVfM daily and have access to the inner workings of AVfM and costs and expenses etc… have no problem/trust issues with the funding? Everyone of them is an unpaid volunteer. Think about that for a second? How come they never have an issue?

        • napocapo69

soikku the donation is not mandatory.
AVFM is the most important men’s right website (but it is not just a website) around the globe. 80K$ a year does not seem an unreasonable budget.
The project is expanding with dissemination around the world with local editions.
There is material to purchase, recurrent service fees to cover, and there is also a person (to my knowledge) working full-time on AVFM.
And in the budget there must space to allocate money for new initiatives such the conference to be held in 2014.
Do you expect to run the flagship of the movement with 5,000 $ every quarter?

          Let’s be pragmatic.
If you are not in the condition to donate it is ok. None is forced to do.

I personally prefer to make small (but continuous) donations because I believe that supporters (thousands every day) should prove their commitment to the movement, and the AVFM team, in order to remain free, must not be tied to the generosity of few donors.

        • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

LOL. you missed a lot. I spent almost two grand just buying people cameras last year, and more than that in legal fees.

Not that it is any of your fucking business

Pure and simple, you don’t know what the fuck you are talking about. I don’t run a business model here that leaves it open to trolls like you to come in here in a first post and raise a stink about every financial decision made.

And that is what you are doing. Trolling.

Now, you have had your say, and I am going to let your post stand. But you won’t be allowed to derail this thread with trolling bullshit.

This is an activist site. If you don’t like the way things are done here, then take a hike. Or, if you are interested in men’s rights, then roll up your sleeves and I will put you to work. When you have actually done something to earn it, I will discuss finances in more detail with you as I have with others who are a part of things here.

          • alek

That’s also a future/past note to anyone who wants to get the right to tell AVfM how it should be run on any aspect of operations. I’ve seen people complain why they can’t just barge in and give unsolicited advice and tell Paul and team how to do things.

If you want to be taken seriously, volunteer for a few months, the more you volunteer, the deeper you will get into the organization, and after you’ve seen all the day to day grinds and problems and issues, after you actually KNOW what you’re talking about, when you say something, it will be heard.

So again shortly – you want to change how AVfM is run?

VOLUNTEER – The more you volunteer and help out, the more your opinion is taken as relevant after you know what it actually takes to make all this work.

          • Imdefender

What kind of cameras did you buy?
I ask because we at mens rights sydney are looking for a good camera for our activism

          • https://www.facebook.com/pages/A-Voice-for-Men/102001393188684 Paul Elam

I have purchased a few different ones, but this is the one I recommend. It is the one I use for my occasional live talks. Very good camera, and importantly, it adapts for an external mic, so you can get better sound. You will be surprised by how many don’t. The one catch, it is not in the advertising, but you must buy a sony mic that is compatible with it. It is proprietary.

            Still, damn good camera.

        • Stu

As one of biggest financial contributors to avfm to date, , I’m going to have to throw my 2 cents worth into this conversation..

I’ve got to know Paul pretty well I think, and the guy works his arse off around the clock fighting for men’s rights. Even if he pocketed every cent raised, he would be poorly paid for the quantity or quality of the work he does. But I have knowledge of the expenses avfm incures to keep going, and I don’t believe there is anything left for Paul to pocket, and in in fact. I would not be surprised of Paul is still in the red after years of dipping onto his own pockets to get things up and running.

You got a problem with donating…..simple…don’t. I don’t know of anybody who donate who has a problem.

Since you’re just another blow in who seems to be trying to do the feminists work for them, by trying to dissuade people from donating……I have one more thing to say.

          Eat shit

There are other expenses like the website, but they are one-time expenses

The website licences are recurring (most of them). Out of the 10 website technologies that AVfM has licenced, only 2 are lifetime licences, the other 8 are recurring.

AVfM hasn’t even used all of these yet on the live site (coming in 2014), but basically there are about 100-200 features coming (depending on volunteer labor ability to implement this stuff as fast as possible) –> AVfM is about to grow as complex as facebook/wordpress.com/twitter/new-york-times combined. It’s hyper ambitious and its based on some super heavy licencing, which again, most of those licences are recurring.

Another small donation on the way!
Let’s have a troublesome new year.

A great addition to the mix. Thank you!

Not late at all, and thank you very much!

  • externalangst

Less than the usual very modest donation. Ahh… the life of a student.

    • greg

      Are you. Asking me?

      • externalangst

Certainly not Greg. I’m speaking for myself. In fact, you seem to have pledged $10 more than I have given.

        • greg

Sorry. Dec is the worst for me. My 11yr old would love 30 in his pocket. I contribute to AVFM when I can, because, your work is VERY important.

          • greg

Now I understand. Forgive me. I was tired and I can’t wait for this holiday season to be over. Meant no offense, and I did drop my check in the mail today..

A thousand modest guys can change the world. Thank you.

My comment posted, and then his thankfully immediately. I thought he was administrator commenting on me and I am 100% wrong. My fault.

Far worse shit has happened. Happy New Year, brother.

Small Donation sent last week. However, I would really like the creation of a separate fund raiser that would allow the senior workers of AVFM – to take a week vacation break – at some perhaps all inclusive and affordable resort in the Caribbean. The rest and improved health will be well worth the investment.

Thank you very much. I would love to see the same thing some day. People don’t see it near enough, but people like August, Peter Wright and others that form the backbone of keeping this publication rolling are at it more or less constantly. They never cease to amaze for their willingness and dedication.

Another donation on the way, courtesy of le petite Grand Danois.
    Happy New Year to everyone.

      Many thanks, Kimski!

Paul, I cannot use credit cards from Europe and I have no check book (not needed here) and I do not want a paypal.

My wife runs a small translation business so I used her account and we just donated $200.00

Thank you for all you do.

I have read here as people criticized you. May I share my thoughts? If anyone is doubting Paul, please think: if he is doing this for selfish reasons, it makes no sense to use the money on himself. He stands to make much more money (assuming he is selfish) if he first ensures the success of AVfM after the Detroit meeting.

So if you are in doubt, go ahead and consider it a donation for just the conference and step back if you wish and watch and reconsider later if you want.

But this conference is extremely important to challenge the convergence of a femininst-inspired definition of masculiniity as being “perpetrated” by girls like Michael Kimmel..

For myself, I have been waitng to find men like Paul and Dean who are willing to sacrifice so much of their time to the cause.

I myself dropped the red pill this past autumn and have never looked back.

I am so apprecitive that there are men like you who shouldered the rage and anger of the feminists. I am so sorry it took me so long to join the ranks.

Please do not thank me for this money.

    Please accept my gratitude.

It is impossible for me to not acknowledge your gift. I won’t use the words you asked me not to you, but you know what I am thank…uh, thinking! LOL!

20 pounds ($32.85) for the kitty.

Really looking forward to what we can all achieve in 2014, and especially looking forward to working with so many people I’ve got so much respect for! The tide is slowly turning, and we are making it happen.

    Happy New Year everybody.

      Outstanding! Thank you, sir!

    $45USD on it’s way Paul! :)

P.S. I worked-out what was stopping the donate button working for me(dunno about other people)!
Disabling Flash-Block for this site allowed the button to work! 😉
