Nelson Mandela is dead. Nonviolent human rights activist and South Africa’s first black President died at 8:50pm local time, at his Johannesburg home today after an extended illness. Mr Mandela passed away surrounded by his family. He was 95.
South African President Jacob Zuma broke the news to press and called Mr Mandela South Africa’s
‘greatest son.’ “Together we will bid him farewell. Let us remember his vision of a society in which no-one is exploited, possessed, or disposed by another. Let us commit ourselves to strive together sparing no strength or courage to build a a united non-racial, non-sexist democratic and prosperous South Africa. Let us express each in our own way the gratitude for a life that was spent in service of the people of this country, and the cause of humanity.”
All flags will be lowered at half-mast and will remain that way until after Mr Mandela’s funeral.
