In April 2009, after 16 months of compiling research and analysis, Australia’s Labor Government, under the guidance of Prime Minister Kevin Rudd, approved the controversial project ‘Time for Action; National Council to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children’.[1] For the next 18 months, the members of the Governmental council in charge of formulating a plan, gathered information and data from academic institutions, non-profit organizations, clearing houses of research papers and from other Governmental councils already established for the benefit of women only. On February 15, 2011 the Council of Australian Governments (COAG), headed by Prime Minister Julia Gillard, officially approved the 12 year plan, slating it for immediate action.[2]
The scale and scope of the proposed projects and actions rivaled almost any social program by the Australian government’s history that has targeted only one portion of its population. Before we examine the who, what and why, I think it is important to take a step back, to look at what forces were behind the movement, what their motivations were, how they gathered their statistics and data and how they were able to influence one of the country’s largest pieces of sex/gender based legislation and projects.
As an aside: In PM Rudd’s press release it states “The Government’s position on violence against women is zero tolerance.” I wonder, does that mean that the Australian government has a more than zero tolerance of violence against men? Looking back at the ten’s of thousands of ANZAC bodies piled up on the shores of Gallipoli; or the unbelievable work of the Aussie and New Zealand ‘diggers’ who held off Gen. Erwin Rommel’s much stronger Deutsches Afrikakorps for over six months in the North African shithole of Tobruk; I’d say the answer to that question is probably yes.
In May of 2011, Melbourne was the host of the Feminist Futures Conference, which billed itself as an “active space for discussing different strategies to create a feminist future.”[3] Before the conference even got underway, a very nasty split erupted between two different factions of the feminist groups. The event sponsors first nixed the anti-porn feminist author Melinda Tankard-Reist for her speaking slot because of her stance on abortion. Then several of the other feminists, mostly transgendered friendly, began a vocal campaign to remove the popular radical feminist Sheila Jeffreys from the program for her outspoken scorn and hatred of transgendered people. Eventually the contingent of radical feminists quit the show all together, and two members of the website Radfem Hub who go by the name Amazon Mancrusher and Allecto, found room to hold a separate conference of their own.
They named it the “Real Feminist Futures Conference,” which featured the radical feminists Renate Klein, Susan Hawthorne, Sheila Jeffreys, Caroline Norma, Lorene Gottschalk as well as the Radfem Hub members Allecto and Amazon Mancrusher.[5] The conference consisted of the normal radical feminist talk concerning anti-porn, anti- transgender, anti-prostitution, how best to destroy male dominance and of course their devotion and admiration for SCUM Manifesto author and attempted murderer Valerie Solanas.[6][7] After the conference, Allecto and Amazon Mancrusher finalized their plans for another conference in Perth that year, which would be a tribute to Valerie Solanas called the SCUM conference.[8]

Life in this society being, at best, an utter bore, this THREE DAY RADICAL FEMINIST CONFERENCE is for civic-minded, responsible, thrill-seeking females who want to overthrow the government, eliminate the money system, institute complete automation and destroy the male sex. Workshops, guest presenters and social activities, plus a space to celebrate and re-member the life and work of Valerie Solanas and other radical feminists.”
In late September, 2011, the now larger group of radical feminists gather in Perth for their much anticipated SCUM conference. The fact that the conference was billed as a tribute to a woman who advocated the extermination of men, and called males “walking abortions,” never seemed to bother the well known professors, authors and activists from their excitement of the conference. This time the list of speakers and attendees was much larger than in May. It included:[9]

- Melinda Tankard Reist – Author and anti-porn, anti-prostitution activist

- Dr. Gail Dines – British author, professor and activist for radical feminist issues working in the US
- Spiderlily Redgold – IT entrepreneur and businesswoman
- Ryl Harrison – Phd Candidate at James Cook University in Townsville
- Noushin Aref-Adib – Iranian born activist
- Rain Lewis – Owner and administrator of the Radfem forums
- Organizers Allecto and Amazon Mancrusher[10]
What happened at the SCUM conference isn’t really what is important. What is important however is the level of interaction with the Radfem Hub website(people who organized the conference), by these somewhat popular writers and professors, especially Susan Hawthorne, Sheila Jeffreys and Betyy McLellan, all of who have made their own guest post on that site. Why is that important? By now, I’m sure you are all aware of the discussions that have occurred frequently on the Radfem Hub and forum, which include talk of gendercide, male infanticide and biological solutions to deal with the problem of men. Some of the more disturbing quotes from the Radfem Hub in just one discussion alone were:[11]

These kinds of brutal, violent and hateful discussions are rather endless on the Radfem Hub and forum, which really begs the question why people like Susan Hawthorne, Sheila Jeffreys and Betty McLellan, among others, would be associated with this site and its administrators and owner. Hawthorne has published nearly a hundred books from dozens of authors at her Spinifex Press. Jeffreys, while her work is controversial and repugnant in its own right, is an often quoted and interviewed as a well known feminist professor. McLellan is the principle founder of a Coalition for a Feminist Agenda, and who has herself hosted several quite large feminist conferences of her own over the past 15 years in Australia. Could it be that their views are in line with those quotes above?
While I don’t know the answer to this, I do know that McLellan, Jeffreys and Hawthorne are closely involved with many other feminists and radical feminists throughout Australia, almost all of whom, including these three, have had their academic papers and research publications used 100′s of times by the Australian government, as justification in its bid to enact programs like the one mentioned at the beginning of the article, the ‘National plan to Reduce Violence against Women and their Children’. How is it that people with questionable, if not outright extremist views such as these, are chosen to be referenced and cited in official Australian government business?
There is an actual answer to that question, which we will take up in the part.

It is no wonder then that a SCUM conference was openly held on Australian soil, and attended by academics, without anyone so much as batting an eyelid. Would this have been able to happen in the USA? I think everyone will be surprised just how widespread this network is, and how they have been able to embed themselves in many facets of organizations within the Australian government and within non-profit organizations that produce volumes of work considered expert analysis, which is used by the Australian Government. Much of their statistical work is shoddy and purposely misleading, or poorly veiled attempts at using data out of context or even outright lying. How is this stuff used then? Well, a few of the Australian Ministers and other public officials are very sympathetic to the feminist cause, some are even sympathetic to radical feminists.
Bottom line is the Australian government is enacting laws and programs that discriminate against men, despite all the data that shows men doing poorly, by using an ideology based on the premise of “Patriarchy.” Its happened in the US, Canada and UK already, you guys down in Australia seem to keep getting waves of these repressive laws. I feel very empathic for all you Aussie men.
Now that children have been classified exclusively as mere possessions of women (even after having survived women’s unilateral entitlement to abortion decisions) does that mean that Australian men will no longer be required to support them? Will the courts henceforth be assigning them specific monetary values as assets — or perhaps liabilities if male — to be offset against divorce settlements?

I think that what really bothers the ubiquitous, overweight, unattractive, androgynous, self-righteous female concerned with “our” wellbeing is that men might be looking at much more attractive females without “their” approval. And although her position as an authority on the subject is dubious at best, I would imagine any increase in violence in pornography could easily be attributed to feminism and misandry without a helluva lot of research into the subject.

A good way to frame that question to a reporter might be:
We know historically that men have been 99.99 percent of combat casualties and deaths, and in the current wars in Iraq & Afghanistan the numbers for women combat casualties and deaths are less than 3 percent. If the government has zero tolerance for violence against women, does that mean we can expect those numbers for women to decrease back down to the historical value of less than .01 percent? In other words, can we again expect to see 99.99 percent government tolerance for violence against men? And is that what we’re talking about when feminists talk about, “a level playing field?”

I was stunned when ‘their’ was inserted into that sentence. Prior to its insertion the government funded violence campaign had been running for several years as “Australia says no to violence against women”. It was then extended to read “Australia says no to violence against women and children,” and finally the possessive their was added. The audacity and unchallenged hegemony for all Australian women is given in this little word.

The earlier program was based on an ABS study which the Labor government of the time distorted through interference with the bureau’s work. - The same here in Canada with its Act of Parliament called the Constitution Act, 1982. Here’s an excerpt:

I am tired of being bullied by feminism. Because it is the holidays, I am at my parent’s house. I still have my old room here, although I don’t want them to be so accomodating for me. My feminist sister, her husband, and kids are here visiting too. She lambastes me for picking conversational topics about science or history, pointing out that I am “bullying” everyone and trying to belittle and make everyone else feel stupid. This could not be further from the truth. So, I can only talk about peanut butter and bubble gum, I guess.
I am the uncle of her two boys. I try to talk to them but nothing I say is correct, according to her. Her oldest boy attends the advanced school for math and science. If I try to ask him things about math and science, to try to get to know him and engage him intellectually, for the age he is, my sister jumps my ass. Nothing I can say is right. I am apparently trying to make him feel stupid.

But if I were bold enough to point this out to her, it would have caused a fight. I only get to see them a couple of times a year, as they live in Texas; I am in Mississippi. That was a truly terrible holiday, Keyster. I am back now and can actually read what you have written. I am so glad that you are able to vent here, too. I think that a lot of us had a really rough holiday season. I am glad to have hot water, electricity, dry socks, and plenty to eat. I am so thankful that I am not in the category of men with real problems like homelessness, in prison, or with the sorrow of TJB or the hundreds or thousands of men who feel just like he felt. I won’t even do family functions outside of funerals anymore. Not since my Father died. I ditched my immediate family a few years ago. The females are some of the most absurdly arrogant manipulative busybodies that ever lived. Some are worse than others but being around them was bad for my mental health. I think it was the right decision. I need to get them out of my head so they can’t bother me so much and I think time will do it. I’m not sure how long it’ll take.
She’s subhuman, period. Treat her with the contempt and indifference that only a subhuman deserves.
Ben, I still call you a ‘hero’, both for your public activism, and, now, for standing up to these Sunts (that’s spelled with a C-cedilla, like the word façade).
‘Course, I don’t have first-hand knowledge of your family and I have to refrain from making judgements. Hoewever, your witnessing has the air of truth to it, and can certainly prompt helpful thoughts.
So now I put my Doctor Frill lab-jacket on, and let’s pretend we’re on tv.
Before I go on, I should add that I spent the Xmas period being stalked by a female in-law. That’s stalked, the legal definition thereof. For the sake of peace and good manners, I put up with it for a week, then threw the bitch out of the picture, forever, no violence denoted.
Now to your case.
No family is without the tensions you log here. I think we have all gone through this [reaction shot from studio audience]. In your place, here’s what I’d do:
- Get outta there pronto. Find a convenient door, excuse, etc. and get the hell out. They need you more than you need them.
- Let the nephews know you’re going. Don’t be silent; be pointed but diplomatic. Perhaps, an email to them saying that “my presence seems to have bothered your mother and grandmother so much, it would be unfair to keep imposing on everyone.”
The boys will query the mother, who might make crazy excuses or fly into a rage. This can make you a hero for the boys for their entire lives. After all, bitching at you is merely a reprise of bitching at them. Once they’re older, they’ll understand and sympathize.
- Write another email to the sis. May I suggest something like this: “You’ve become what I believe they call Helicoptor Mom, the uber-controller of children. You are particularly frantic that I not talk to your boys in ways that haven’t been vetteed and filtered by you. This is more a symptom of your own mental state than anything else. Work it out with a therapist. I’ll contact you sometime in the future, but it may not be for a very long time.”

I really appreciate your thoughtful comments, Justicer. I will give that some serious thought, especially the part about letting her know somehow that I think she is being a helicopter mom. Good term, by the way. I have never heard that before.
Well think it through, but don’t put any pressure on yourself.
‘Helicopter Mom’ is that cultural beast that roams the planet these days behind the wheel of an APC outfitted with 10 video screens that track every movement of what is laughably called ‘her children’ — actually, they’re more like inmates at Folsom. It’s a metaphor for the era of total control: auditing every conversation; having an opinion on every detail of their lives; outfitting every kid with a cell phone + gps, etc. These are the moms who drive Junior and Jilliner to the school yard that’s 200 feet from home, and pick them up at 4 pm in the Van. We wonder why no one can get their shit together!

I had a look at the program for this, thanks for the link Kyle! There is a 16 point “participants agreement” = a code of conduct for attendees. I have attended many professional conferences and never seen a program needing spell out to participants on how to behave in a civil manner to each other!! These feminists know how bitchy, aggressive and abusive women can be to each other, and of course have a multi tiered grievance policy as well!!
Then you get to the actual program and some of the earth shattering socially imperative topics to be presented, my favourite is “GenderQuake: Disrupting Privilege within Feminist Movements” presented by “Ryan Sparkleby is a trans* queer whore. He likes drinking ice tea and riding bicycles. and Hunter HeapsGood is a trans* Gender Studies student. Interests include Eurodance and anything with sequins.”
